Nanjing has been the capital of six dynasties, the Ming, and the republic — and the city wears all of it at once: Ming walls and imperial tombs on one hill, republican villas on the next, a memorial to 1937 by the river, and plane-tree avenues over everything. Give it three unhurried days. It repays depth far more than speed.
