Shanhaiguan is the rare place where a fortified Ming city, mountain wall and Bohai shoreline can be read as one defensive landscape. First Pass guarded the corridor into northeast China; Old Dragon's Head carried the wall into the sea; Jiaoshan lifted it over the first mountain ridge. A focused two-day visit is more useful than repeating the old-guide habit of listing every reconstructed attraction.
