Weihai sits at the easternmost tip of the Shandong peninsula, the closest point in mainland China to Korea, and wears its history and its environment with equal seriousness. This was the home port of the Qing dynasty's Beiyang Fleet and the setting of the naval war of 1894–95; today it is one of China's cleanest, most livable coastal cities — award-winning air, a working harbor, broad free beaches, and whooper swans wintering on its northern lagoons.
