Wuzhen is the water town that learned to stage itself — a thousand-year-old weave of canals, stone lanes and black-awning boats split into two halves: Dongzha, the older, lived-in east, and Xizha, a masterfully rebuilt west where the whole town glows after dark. It is also an unlikely theatre capital, hosting one of China's most celebrated drama festivals every autumn.
