Xitang is the water town where the roofs come down to meet you: more than a kilometer of covered corridors runs along its canals, built so that vendors, neighbors and now visitors can walk all day without an umbrella. Nine rivers cross it under a scatter of old stone bridges, and lanes narrow to a single file. By day it is unhurried; by night, red lanterns double themselves in the water and the bar street hums.
