Read the northern frontier through grassland, forest and desert

Inner Mongolia is not one grassland picture. The Hulunbuir forest-steppe, the north and south of the Yinshan range, the Hetao irrigation plain and the Alxa desert span thousands of kilometres — read the east and the west separately.

Where to start

  • The Hulunbuir grassland & Ergun
  • The Greater Khingan & Arxan
  • The Xilingol grassland
  • Hohhot & the Zhaojun museum
  • Ordos & Xiangshawan
  • Ejina — Juyan lake — the black city

Read these before you plan

  • P0
East line or west line first — then transport and rooms

Hulunbuir, Arxan, Xilingol, Hohhot–Ordos and Alxa differ in both distance and season: a first visit plans five days minimum on one line, not a province sprint.

  • P0
Arxan and Ejina are the bookings that reshape everything

Arxan's peak combo books via the official account; Ejina's poplar season tightens rooms, flights and tickets together. Lock dates, tickets and lodging before the rest of the plan.

  • P0
Along the border, check passage and shooting rules first

Gates, boundary rivers, the kalin roads and ports sit under border administration: drones, crossing, approaching markers and closed roads all carry strict limits — verify before setting out.

  • P1
    Light windows outrank sight counts

Grasslands live in dawn and the 90 minutes before sunset June–September; Arxan's autumn and mist run mid–late September; Ejina gives sunrise to Juyan and dusk to the poplars.

  • P1
Keep the must-list few and precise

East line: the Morigele platforms, Ergun wetland's main boardwalk, Arxan's Camel-hump lake or Azalea lake, the Manzhouli gate. West line: Xiangshawan's dunes, the mausoleum, Ejina's three.

  • P2
Ecology and herder life outrank photos

No driving onto meadows, no entering fenced pasture, no chasing livestock, no camping in closed areas, no picking in reserves, no litter. Herder country, monasteries and border zones follow on-site rules.

  • P2
Write weather and closures as the plan B

Grassland gales, dust, thunder and cold snaps close platforms, cables and border roads; Arxan's fire season, Ejina's flow controls and area notices all need a substitution ready.

A · Core landmarks

Start with the east's grass-and-forest or the west's desert

Hulunbuir, Arxan, Xilingol and the Hohhot–Ordos–Alxa axis: first visits pick the forest-grassland east or the desert-historic west — each is a full trip.

C · Slow corners

Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried

Liukeng-style deep villages aside, Inner Mongolia's slow layer is Ulan Butong's mornings, Badain Jaran's interior and the small museums — for second visits and slow paces.

How to save money and time

RoutesEast and west as two trips — never 'all of Inner Mongolia' at once

Hulunbuir, Arxan, Xilingol and Hohhot–Ordos–Alxa measure their distances in hundreds of kilometres: forcing one loop loses two-thirds of the time to driving.

TicketsAt Xiangshawan buy one island's package

The base ticket already includes the gate and the cable return at a reference ¥120; single islands run ¥260–280 with doubles higher — one island is the right shape.

TransportSelf-drive or charter the big regions — pace by kilometres

Hailar–Ergun–Shiwei–Manzhouli, Xilinhot's flats and Hohhot–Ordos–Alxa all reward driving because the sights string along the roads; but the daily kilometre cap is the plan.

LodgingSleep by the shooting window, not the gate

Arxan in the park or Yershi, Ulan Butong in-area, Ejina in Dalaihubu — so sunrise and sunset don't cost a town return. Compare rates only after the window is secured.

SeasonsGrassland and poplars never share one October

Grassland peaks June–September; Ejina's poplars run about 25 September–20 October — the windows miss each other, so choose the season first and the line second.

CombosJudge Ejina's three-sight combo by your light segments

The main poplar area, the black city's weird forest and Juyan lake often package near ¥400 in season — take it only if dawn, dusk and midday segments all fit your plan.
