Four centuries of maritime encounter, read in peninsula lanes
Macao is small in scale but extremely dense in historical layers. Churches, temples, forts, courtyard lanes and modern reclamation interlock — best explored off the main roads, on foot, watching how Chinese and Western life coexist.

Where to start
- The Ruins of St. Paul's — Mount Fortress — St. Lazarus

Read these before you plan
- P0Confirm mainland-entry standing and Macao's immigration rules first
Macao is a Special Administrative Region of China: foreign travellers need both their mainland China visa/visa-free standing and Macao's own entry permission sorted — official notices govern, not guidebooks.
- P1Give dawn and dusk to the crowd peaks
The Ruins and Senado shoot before 9:00; Guia keeps afternoon-to-sunset for the lighthouse and skyline; Coloane warms after 15:00.
- P1Lock five must-sees — don't grow the list
First Macao: the Ruins, the Fortress, Senado, A-Ma and the Guia lighthouse; Taipa-Coloane adds the Taipa Houses or Coloane village as the second tier.
- P2Today's notices override prices and hours
Churches follow Mass, museums close Monday or Tuesday, the Tower and shows reschedule — check the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the tourism site 24 hours out.
- P2Religious, residential and casino boundaries outrank shots
Churches and temples are working sacred space: quiet inside, no shooting rites; St. Lazarus, Felicidade and the Inner Harbour still hold residents and working boats — same for the precints.

How to save money and time
From A-Ma along the Inner Harbour–St. Lawrence–Mandarin's House–Senado–Ruins–Fortress–Guia: most of the peninsula's main line in one descent.
The Ruins' facade, the Fortress gardens, Senado, A-Ma and Guia are usually free; the Macao Museum is a reference MOP15 — decide the interiors before the day.
The Tower's decks, bungee and skywalk, and the Grand Prix museum, all move prices and times — compare the official site with proper platforms before buying.
The old peninsula walks best; Taipa and Coloane go by bus or hotel shuttle — a solo taxi is rarely faster. One day shouldn't cross the water three times.
Senado, the Ruins or San Ma Lo putting dawn and dusk old-town shots in reach; island-heavy plans may sleep Taipa-side instead.
October–March suits long walks with steadier sun and visibility; July–September typhoon, rainstorm or heat warnings swap the plan to museums and malls.
