Karst peaks and the Li River

The landscape on the back of the ¥20 note. Guilin is the transport hub, but most people base themselves in Yangshuo, where the river, the peaks and the cycling all start.

Where to start
- The Li River in Guilin, and Yangshuo
- Longji Rice Terraces and Dong villages
- Liuzhou: industrial city and luosifen noodle culture
Read these before you plan
- P0Booking order: Yulong River bamboo rafts, Weizhou Island ferries, Elephant Trunk Hill real-name entry
Yulong River rafts usually need booking a day ahead at the specific dock; Weizhou Island ferries are constrained by both real-name rules and weather; Elephant Trunk Hill is free but requires a real-name reservation. Lock in these variables first, then plan your Li River cruise and Longji stay. On holidays, don't assume you can buy same-day tickets on the spot.
- P0Don't cut the major sights below their minimum stay
Allow at least 4 hours for the Xingping section of the Li River, 6 hours for Longji, 4 hours for Detian, and 2 days / 1 night for Weizhou Island. Below that, queues, transfers and light will turn every stop into a drive-by. On a first Guangxi trip, don't let "same province" fool you about real transfer distances.
- P0Sleep in the right place and skip one mountain trip or sea crossing
For a Longji sunrise, sleep inside the village; for the Yulong River at dawn, stay around Jiuxian or the Ten-Mile Gallery in Yangshuo; spend at least one night on Weizhou Island. For the Detian–Huashan line, base yourself in Chongzuo city, Daxin or near the Mingshi countryside — don't commute long distances from Nanning or Beihai every day.
- P1October–April is the main season; in the rainy season keep boats and islands flexible
Guilin, Yangshuo, Longji, Huashan and Equan get steadier light from October to April. Detian runs fuller May–October, but downpours, typhoons and high water can disrupt rafts, boats and mountain roads. Keep at least one flex day — don't stake your last day on the Weizhou Island ferry back or on mountain roads after a storm.
- P1Fewer must-see stops, chosen well
On the Li River keep the Huangbu reflection at Xingping; in Yangshuo keep one stretch of the Yulong River; at Longji pick either Jinkeng or Ping'an; at Detian the frontal panorama and the waterside boardwalk; at Huashan the boat view. Don't sweep every similar viewpoint — shooting one landform type thoroughly beats collecting ten near-identical shots.
- P1For border and island routes, check documents, ferries and opening notices first
Dongxing's national gate doesn't involve crossing the border; Detian and Huashan follow the day's official notices. Weizhou Island ferries can be cancelled for rough seas, and Huashan boat schedules shift with water levels. Border, port, sea-condition and reserve rules outrank photography — don't buy unofficial "guaranteed island landing / border crossing" packages.
- P2Let same-day information override old guides, for weather, crowds and community rules
Treat official same-day notices as authoritative for ticket prices, opening hours, shows, shuttle buses and temporary caps. Terraces, villages and rock art sit amid farmland and people's homes: don't step on paddies, climb old bridges or enter private courtyards. Mountain roads are slippery in rain — cancel night drives under typhoon or thunderstorm warnings.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Guangxi's first coordinates.
This layer sets Guangxi's first visual coordinates: karst peaks, the Li River system, rice terraces, a transnational waterfall and a volcanic island. First-timers should pick 2–3 — don't cram them all into one day just because they look close on the map.
B · Regional depth
A second layer beyond the classic scenery.
This layer covers the industrial city, Dong villages, UNESCO rock art and Beibu Gulf coastal life — for travellers who've seen Guilin's highlights and want to read Guangxi's second layer at a slower pace.
C · Slow corners
Deep cuts and honest trade-offs for those with time.
This layer fills in the frontier story of the Hongshui River, Jingxi, Fangchenggang and the Beibu Gulf — including two honestly low-priority trade-offs, so you don't mistake commercialised spots or ordinary beaches for highlights.
Suggested route shapes
- Guilin–Yangshuo–Longji · 4 days
- Liuzhou–Sanjiang–Hechi · 3–4 days
- Chongzuo border or Beibu Gulf · 3–4 days
How to save money and time
Within 7 days, string Guilin city, the Li River, the Yulong River in Yangshuo and Longji into one spine — don't squeeze Chongzuo, Hechi and Beihai into the same trip. Same province doesn't mean short distances on the map; Detian, Huashan, Qibainong and Weizhou Island each work as a second direction with at least a day of their own.
Yulong River rafts are priced per raft with different routes — check prices a day ahead on official channels like "iYou Yangshuo". Buy Weizhou Island ferry tickets in advance, real-name, through official channels like "Laiyouba". Don't pay unverifiable third-party markups for "guaranteed tickets, no queues, private boats".
Detian, Huashan, Equan and Qibainong are scattered with weak bus connections. Groups should price self-drive or a chartered car first — usually cheaper than day-by-day charters plus scenic-area shuttles. Solo travellers should check that high-speed rail, county buses and scenic-area transfers actually connect; save time, but don't mistake dead transfers for savings.
For a Longji sunrise or morning mist, stay inside Jinkeng Dazhai or Ping'an village — don't retreat to Guilin city to save one night's room rate and climb back up. For the Yulong River at dawn, the Ten-Mile Gallery or Jiuxian area beats West Street for convenience. West Street has the buzzing food scene, but worse dawn light and higher transport costs.
Guangxi's autumn and winter bring less rain and clearer light — ideal for the Li River, Longji, Huashan and Equan. Summer's high water makes Detian spectacular, but typhoons and storms can change ferry, road and sea conditions. Leave generous change/cancel room for Weizhou Island, Silver Beach and the Hongshui River route; treat a cancelled sailing as normal, not an emergency.
Break down Detian's shuttle-inclusive ticket, Longji's shuttle or cable car, the Huashan boat, and Weizhou Island's ferry-plus-landing-fee by actual use. First-timers can buy a package with transfers included, but if you're only visiting one spot, don't pay for "multiple parks included". All prices follow the official same-day notices.
