Start here

Dali rewards a slower plan. The Old Town, Xiaguan transport hub, Cangshan foothills and Erhai lakeshore are different places—not one walkable resort. Pick a base, group sights by area and leave room for weather.

Dali Old Town

History and evening walks

Stay here for lanes, local food, guesthouses and a convenient starting point for the mountain and lakeside.

Xiaguan / Dali Station

Connections, not atmosphere

The modern urban centre and main rail arrival are useful for transfers. It is distinct from Dali Old Town.

Xizhou

Bai architecture and village life

A northern lakeside town known for courtyard houses, market streets and local snacks. Be considerate in lived-in neighbourhoods.

Shuanglang

North-east lake views

A good overnight choice if you want a quieter lakeside stay; it is not a quick hop from every western-shore stop.

Plan by geography: keep Old Town and the Three Pagodas together; give Cangshan its own block of time; choose either a west-shore day or a Shuanglang day rather than trying to circle the whole lake.
