Kunming is more than a convenient transfer between Yunnan destinations. Give the city a day for its everyday rhythm, another for Dianchi and Western Hills, and a separate day for the Stone Forest outside the urban centre.

Central Kunming

Green Lake and old streets

Stay centrally for parks, museums, Yunnan University area, food streets and easier evening walks.

Dianchi

Lake and mountain together

Pair a shore visit with Western Hills only if transport and weather work for the day; they sit outside the downtown walking area.

Shilin County

Stone Forest day

The UNESCO-listed karst landscape is outside the city. Avoid stacking it with another major excursion.

Transit hub

Airport connections

Kunming Changshui Airport links to the city by rail and road. Confirm the current terminal route and last service after landing.

Route by area: keep Green Lake, the Military Academy and central food streets together; group Dianchi and Western Hills; set aside a full day for Shilin.
