Nyingchi — "the sun's throne" in Tibetan, Linzhi in Chinese — is Tibet's soft green corner: forested valleys along the Yarlung Tsangpo and its tributary the Niyang, villages under snow peaks, and a famous March–April peach blossom season that turns whole valleys pink beneath un-melted summits. At a valley altitude of roughly 3,000 meters, it is also the gentlest introduction to the plateau — Tibetans call it "Tibet's Jiangnan," the lush south — and home to one of the world's great unsolved sights: the near-perfect pyramid of Namcha Barwa above the deepest canyon on earth.
