Zhoushan is China's only prefecture made entirely of islands — some thirteen hundred of them scattered across the East China Sea at the mouth of Hangzhou Bay. It is the country's great fishing ground, and its capital lives on the water's rhythm: dawn quays, night seafood stalls strung along the harbor, ferries chasing between beaches, temples and islands out of legend. The sacred isle of Putuoshan gets its own HelloChina handbook; this one is for the archipelago around it.
