Anhui
安徽 · CN-AH
Two kinds of China in one province, from Huizhou villages to the northern plain
Anhui is more than Huangshan and Hongcun. Huizhou clan settlements, the Yangtze river cities, the Buddhist mountain and the canal culture of the north differ sharply — split them into a southern and a northern line.

Where to start
- The Huangshan scenic area
- Shexian old city & the Tangyue archways
- Yixian: Hongcun — Xidi — Nanping
- Chengkan & the Qiankou folk houses
- Jiuhua Mountain
- Shouxian old city & the Chu heritage
Read these before you plan
- P0Book Huangshan first; cable cars and summit rooms after
Huangshan runs 'capped, reserved, staggered' with strict real-name, time-slot, direction-checked entry — your ID must match the booking, and peaks like Tiandu may book separately. First visits plan two days; don't hold the whole plan on a day ticket.
- P0The core minimums cannot compress
Huangshan two days and a night; Jiuhua 6–8 hours or a night; Hongcun and Xidi three hours each; Shexian's city plus the Tangyue archways most of a day. Squeezing them is how cable queues eat the mountain.
- P0Choose lodging by the next morning's gate and village line
Climbing Huangshan sleeps in Tangkou or by your gate; Jiuhua in Jiuhua street or the foot visitor centre; the village line sleeps within Yixian or Shexian. 'Close to Huangshan' as a vague phrase books the wrong room.
- P1Give the best light to dawn villages and sunset mountains
Hongcun's South Lake, Xidi's archway and Zhaji's stream all want the thin dawn crowds; Huangshan's sunrise, Jiuhua's cloud sea and Tianzhu's pillars suit evening or the next dawn. Noon holds transfers and museums.
- P1Keep the must-list few and precise
Huangshan: Guangmingding or Shixin peak, the West Sea or Lotus line. Hongcun: South Lake, Moon Pond, Chengzhi hall. Xidi: the Hu Wenguang archway and the main axis. Jiuhua: Jiuhua street, Baishui palace and the Tiantai. One line per place.
- P1The villages' transport scatters — move by area, not by sight
Hongcun, Xidi, Nanping, Chengkan, Qiankou and Tangyue sit in different townships with varying buses and taxi fares: two same-direction points per day at most, and self-drivers budget parking and lane time too.
- P2Today's notices override the guides' static prices and times
Huangshan's cables, Jiuhua's shuttles, the Xin'an boats, Tianzhu's last sales and Qiankou's Monday closure all move on holidays and extreme weather — verify official channels within 24 hours.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Anhui's first coordinates
Huangshan, the Huizhou villages, the Buddhist mountain and Shexian's archways build Anhui's sharpest visual and historical sense. First visits choose Huangshan OR the villages as the main line — never both in one day.
B · Regional depth
From the core coordinates into Huizhou's second line
Chengkan, Qiankou, the Xin'an river, Qiyun, Zhaji and Taiping Lake extend the south-gate area into a fuller Huizhou circuit — for 3–4 days and tolerance for scattered transfers.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
Nanping, Tunxi's old street, Shouxian, Tianzhu, Sanhe and Caishiji complete Huizhou architecture, northern Chu culture, the southwest mountains and the Yangtze cities — for a second Anhui visit, or a province-wide plan.
Suggested route shapes
- Huangshan climb · 2 days
- Huizhou old town & villages · 3–4 days
- Jiuhua Mountain or Shouxian northern line · 2–3 days
How to save money and time
Huangshan takes two days and a night minimum; Hongcun and Xidi half a day each. The classic error is a one-day mountain plus both villages plus Tunxi in three days — the cable queues swallow it.
Hongcun and Xidi both sell ~3-day re-entry tickets — singles total a reference ¥208, combos commonly ¥159–170. Planning both villages? The combo wins; one village only? Buy single.
The south gate at Tangkou is most first visitors' base and transfer point; the north gate towards Taiping suits lake-side entries; the east gate now runs its own bookings and shuttles. Confirm the gate before booking the room.
Huangshan enforces real-name, time-slot, direction-checked entry with separate booking for peaks like Tiandu; Jiuhua's guidance likewise pushes advance real-name tickets on official mini-programmes. Holidays sell out — book before rooms.
Southern Anhui's March–April rapeseed and October–November autumn run steadiest, and before 7:00 Hongcun's lake, Xidi's archway and Zhaji's stream all outrun the noon groups.
Shouxian's wall and the Anhui Chu museum make a day from Hefei or Huainan, with a real transfer cost between it and Huangshan. On a seven-day total, choose: the north OR the south gets the day.
