Along the Gan River and the old post roads, an underrated cultural landscape
Jiangxi sits between the middle Yangtze and Lingnan. Academies, porcelain, merchant villages, revolutionary history and famous mountains form several strands — avoid single-point ticking and read it by river basin.

Where to start
- Tengwang Pavilion & the Uprising sites, Nanchang
- Jingdezhen's Imperial Kiln & Taoxichuan
- Lushan's cultural landscape
- Wuyuan's ancient villages & the Hui–Rao old road
- Ji'an's Bailuzhou & Meibei village
- Longhu or Sanqing mountain
Read these before you plan
- P0Confirm bookings and cable cars before fixing the day's frame
Lushan, Sanqing, Wugong, Longhu and Jinggangshan all carry real-name booking or shuttle/cable constraints; the Imperial Kiln and the Uprising memorial are free but book ahead. In season, hold the core dates first, then the foothill rooms and transfers.
- P0The core areas' minimum times cannot shrink further
Lushan two days and a night; Sanqing and Wugong a day each; Jinggangshan 1.5 days; Longhu 6–8 hours; Huangling 4–6. Below these, the visit is transport — and the mountains don't refund it.
- P0Choose lodging by the gate and the next morning's line
Lushan: Guling or your transfer gate. Sanqing: the Jinsha or Waishuangxi side. Wugong: by the Pingxiang entrance. Jinggangshan: Ciping. Wuyuan villages: the county town, Jiangling or around Huangling. Jingdezhen: Taoyangli or Taoxichuan.
- P1Give the best light to dawn and dusk
Tengwang for sunset lamp reflections; Lushan's Hanpokou and Triple-Diamond falls early; Sanqing's Nanqingyuan and west coast for the morning; Wugong's meadows for sunrise and sunset; Wuyuan's Jiangling and Huangling thin and misty at dawn. Noon holds transfers, museums and meals.
- P1The must-list stays few and precise
Nanchang keeps the Tengwang riverfront; Lushan the Hanpokou–Wulao or Triple-Diamond line; Sanqing the Nanqingyuan and west coast; Wuyuan the Huangling drying racks or Jiangling terraces; Jingdezhen the kiln vaults; Wugong the summit meadow.
- P1Season and weather windows set the mountains' priority
March–May and September–November usually hold, but Lushan's, Sanqing's and Wugong's cloud seas and sunrises all ride on post-rain clears or dawn windows. In sustained rain push the mountains back; under thunder, gale, ice or cable stoppages accept the mountain day is gone.
- P2Today's notices override static numbers; respect protected edges
Fares, last cable cars, shuttles, night sessions and hall closures all move — re-verify official mini-programmes 24 hours out. Old villages, Hakka enclosures, academies and the crane wetland are living and ecological space: boundaries first.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Jiangxi's five visual coordinates
Tengwang, Lushan, Sanqing, Jingdezhen and Wuyuan stand for the river tower, the famous mountain, Taoist pinnacles, porcelain and old villages. A first visit shouldn't take them all — but nothing builds the province's picture faster.
B · Regional depth
From the core coordinates on to the second line
Longhu, Jinggangshan, Wugong, Jiangling, Ji'an and Ganzhou stretch Jiangxi from the Poyang basin to the upper Gan River and the Hunan border — for 5–7 days and anyone willing to split mountains, villages and revolutionary history into blocks.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
Poyang's cranes, Liukeng, the Guanxi enclosure, Ehu Academy, Mingyue Mountain and Nanchang's uprising sites complete wetland ecology, eastern villages, Hakka enclosures, academy history, hot-spring hills and urban modern history — for second visits.
Suggested route shapes
- Nanchang–Lushan · 3 days
- Jingdezhen–Wuyuan · 3–4 days
- Ji’an central line or Longhu Mountain · 2–3 days
How to save money and time
Nanchang, Lushan, Jingdezhen and Wuyuan chain into the northern main line; Longhu, Fuzhou and Ji'an extend east or south; Ganzhou and Longnan sit in the deep south — 'same province' understates the transfers. Within seven days take one main line plus at most two points.
Lushan's core entry is a reference ¥160 with shuttles and cable cars priced separately; Sanqing's entry-plus-cable combo commonly runs ¥245. Never buy on 'the combo is cheaper' — first decide whether you need the shuttle and the cable at all.
The Wuyuan pass is commonly ¥210 over five days, with single villages like Jiangling, Likeng and Sixi–Yancun around ¥60; Huangling prices separately as entry plus cable. Visiting Huangling or one or two villages only? Singles win.
Lushan in Guling or by your transfer gate; Sanqing toward Jinsha or Waishuangxi; Wugong usually enters at Pingxiang's Shigu temple; Jinggangshan sleeps in Ciping. Before booking, verify the next day's entry direction, the first shuttle and any cable suspension.
Jiangxi's spring is Wuyuan's terraces and azaleas; autumn the drying racks, dried grass and clear mountain air. The plum rains and summer showers bring cloud seas but cut visibility and hiking efficiency. In sustained rain, move museums, villages and quarters up the order.
The kiln, Taoxichuan, Huangling and Jiangling suit 3–4 days; Bailuzhou, Meibei, Ganzhou's wall and Longnan's enclosures make a 3–4 day southern humanities block. Merge points that point the same way — never detour just to complete a list.
