Coexistence on a karst plateau, across a network of villages

Guizhou is not only waterfalls and caves. It is mountain transport, Ming garrison towns, Dong and Miao villages and traditional craft forming a cultural network. Guiyang, southeast Guizhou and southwest Guizhou are best taken as separate lines.

Where to start

  • Guiyang old town and Qingyan ancient town
  • Anshun's Tunbao villages and Huangguoshu Waterfall
  • Libo karst
  • Zhaoxing Dong village and Tang'an terraces
  • Zhenyuan ancient town and the Wuyang River
  • Xingyi's Wanfenglin and the Maling River canyon

Read these before you plan

  • P0
Book tickets before you book hotels, especially for Huangguoshu, Xiaoqikong and Mount Fanjing

Huangguoshu requires booking 1–15 days ahead through the "Anlvtong" platform, and the Water-Curtain Cave needs a separate timed reservation. Xiaoqikong currently runs capped, real-name reservations; Mount Fanjing uses timed entry with caps in peak season. Confirm you have tickets for the main sights before booking hotels and onward transport — don't lock in expensive accommodation for dates you can't get into the park.

  • P0
Sleep where the morning light is

In southeast Guizhou, spend a night in Zhaoxing or Zhenyuan; for Jiabang photography, stay inside the village or in Congjiang town. Near Huangguoshu, stay around the scenic area so you can enter right at opening. Don't choose accommodation just for a lively commercial district — being able to walk to the key viewpoints at dawn is usually worth more than saving a few dozen yuan.

  • P0
Don't cut below the minimum stay at the major sights

Allow at least 6–8 hours for Huangguoshu, 6 hours for Xiaoqikong, 1.5 days for Zhaoxing plus Tang'an, 7–8 hours for Mount Fanjing, and 3–4 hours for the Maling River. Anything less usually means queues and rushing. Keep to one demanding highlight per day.

  • P1
Plan your light windows around season and terrain

The terraces are best during flooding and harvest seasons: shoot Zhaoxing's morning cooking smoke and Jiabang's mirror-like water at dawn, Tang'an or Wanfenglin at dusk. Avoid harsh midday light at Huangguoshu; see Xiaoqikong's water colours in the morning and Zhenyuan's river at daybreak. Good light is never guaranteed — have an indoor or valley fallback ready when the weather turns.

  • P1
    Fewer must-see stops, chosen well

At Huangguoshu keep the main waterfall and Water-Curtain Cave; at Xiaoqikong the Wolong Pool and Seven-Arch Bridge; at Zhaoxing the drum tower cluster plus the Tang'an hike; at Zhenyuan the Qinglong Cave and the riverfront; at Wanfenglin the viewing platforms and Bagua Fields; at Mount Fanjing the Mushroom Rock and Red Clouds Golden Summit. Give each stop enough time — don't chase every side branch.

  • P1
Mountain weather, high water and cave safety come before photos

Thunderstorms and high winds shut Mount Fanjing's cable cars; the Maling River may cap visitors after heavy rain; boats and boardwalks close when the Xiaoqikong and Wuyang rivers run high. Zhijin Cave and the FAST telescope site have slippery, demanding stairs. If there's a weather warning, a temporary closure or near-zero visibility, cancelling that photo session is the sensible call.

  • P2
Village, reserve and radio-quiet boundaries matter more than the shot

Zhaoxing, Xijiang, Jiabang and the Tunbao villages are living communities: don't enter private homes, block lanes, or treat festivals as photo backdrops. The FAST core zone bans electronics and drones — check in all devices as required. In nature reserves, don't pick plants, leave the boardwalks, or approach the base of waterfalls.

A · Core landmarks

Start with Guizhou's landscape-and-village coordinates.

This layer covers waterfalls, karst waterscapes, Dong village terraces, old-town river bends and peak-forest farmland. First-timers should pick 2–3 of these five coordinates and plan by geographic belt, not by checklist quantity.

B · Regional depth

A second main line beyond the core scenery.

This layer covers the old towns around Guiyang, Anshun's Tunbao villages, Miao villages, canyons and the Wuling Mountains — for travellers who already know Guizhou's basics and want to go deeper along another geographic belt.

C · Slow corners

Corners for slow travel.

A second layer of Guizhou for those with time and specific interests: Jiabang's terraces, Zhijin Cave, the FAST telescope, the Wuyang River and Guiyang's old town round out the farming, cave, science, river and urban sides of the province. Works as a buffer before heading home or as a themed second visit.

  • Southeast Guizhou villages · 4–5 days
  • Libo or southwest Guizhou · 3 days

How to save money and time

Routessplit Guizhou into three belts first, then pick one main line

Guiyang–Anshun suits Huangguoshu, the Tunbao villages and Qingyan; southeast Guizhou suits Zhaoxing, Jiabang and Zhenyuan; Libo and the southwest lean toward ecology and canyons. Even with 8–13 days, don't try to string all three belts together — pick one main line plus one or two add-ons, and you'll save on cross-region high-speed rail, chartered cars and backtracking over mountain roads.

Ticketsprice admission and shuttle buses separately through official channels

Book Huangguoshu through "Anlvtong"; Xiaoqikong, Mount Fanjing and others through the official "Yimayou Guizhou" platform and the sights' own channels. Reference prices: Huangguoshu ¥160 admission + ¥50 shuttle bus; Xiaoqikong ¥120 + ¥40. Combo tickets aren't automatically the best deal — only upgrade if you'll actually use the night tour, cable car or second entry.

Seasonsbuild flooding, harvest and high-water periods into your route

April–May is for the flooded terraces of Zhaoxing, Tang'an and Jiabang; September–October for ripe rice; May–October brings fuller water at Huangguoshu. If you're coming just to escape the heat in July–August, prioritise Xiaoqikong and Xingyi, and book Huangguoshu and Mount Fanjing for early-morning slots to cut queues and wasted time in the sun.

Staysonly pay the in-park premium where it earns its keep

Zhaoxing, Zhenyuan and Jiabang are worth a night each — dawn and dusk make or break the experience there. Near Huangguoshu, staying by the scenic area gets you in at opening, but skip the pricey view rooms. Guiyang and Xingyi city stays are cheaper with better transport; only stay inside a scenic area if it clearly saves you round-trip time.

Transporthigh-speed rail between cities, charter a car only for the last mountain leg

Guiyang, Anshun, Congjiang, Zhenyuan, Tongren, Libo and Xingyi are mostly linked by high-speed or regular rail. For Zhaoxing, Jiabang, the Tunbao villages, Xiaoqikong and Mount Fanjing's east gate, compare the scenic-area shuttle, local buses and chartered cars by group size. Groups under four don't need a full-trip charter — and never drive unfamiliar mountain roads at night just to skip one transfer.

Combosonly pay for the canyon cable cars and boat rides you'll actually use

The Maling River elevator, Mount Fanjing cable car, Wuyang River boat and Huangguoshu escalator are energy-savers, not mandatory parts of admission. Decide one-way vs round-trip based on that day's walking route and whether you have seniors or kids along; online "all-in-one" tickets often bundle services you won't use.
