Approach high-altitude geography and living faith with respect

Travel in Xizang begins with adapting to altitude and to local order. The Lhasa valley, the Yarlung Tsangpo, the monasteries of the rear region and the Ngari plateau each have their own logic — depth comes from going slowly.

Where to start

  • The Potala Palace & Barkhor, Lhasa
  • Jokhang — Sera — Drepung
  • Samye & Yumbu Lhakang, Lhoka
  • Tashilhunpo monastery, Shigatse
  • The Yarlung Tsangpo valley, Nyingchi
  • Guge & Mount Kailash, Ngari

Read these before you plan

  • P0
The border pass before Everest or Ngari

Everest, Kailash and Manasarovar need the border-management-area pass; from 2026 Lhasa's issuing points moved to the public-security exit-entry departments, with prefecture points adjusted too — arrange it before the route, not at the checkpoint.

  • P0
The Potala and Jokhang are the first bookings

The Potala books up to 10 days ahead on the official mini-programme (2026 peak line-1 ticket a reference ¥200); Jokhang usually books one day ahead by real name. Without tickets, don't prepay non-refundable charters and hotels.

  • P0
Lhasa keeps three days to acclimatise — no high points at the start

The Potala, Drepung, Namtso and Yamdrok differ in altitude and climb; day one is light walking only, temples on day two, the lake or Everest after.

  • P0
Re-lay the minimum times by the core sites

Potala 3–4 hours; Jokhang plus Barkhor half a day; Sera or Drepung 2–4; Tashilhunpo 2.5–4; the Tsangpo valley by its own day.

  • P1
Write light, season and booking slots into the same day

Palace and temples take morning side light; Yamdrok and Namtso want clear skies and low cloud; Namcha Barwa and Everest hold dawn or dusk; Nyingchi's peach season is March–April.

  • P1
The must-list stays few and precise

Lhasa: the Red and White palaces, Jokhang's roofs, the Barkhor kora. Lhoka: Samye's Utse hall and Yumbu's ridge. Shigatse: Tashilhunpo. Nyingchi: the canyon view. No collecting.

  • P2
Today's notices and on-site rules override old guides

Tibetan prices, openings, free-entry schemes, shuttles, kora openings and road controls move often — platform guides are direction only. Thunder, wind, ice and closures accept substitutions; religious etiquette is not negotiable.

A · Core landmarks

Lhasa first: palace, temples, kora

The Potala, Jokhang-Barkhor and the great Gelug monasteries build Lhasa's religious-and-imperial scale — the acclimatisation and the booking skeleton both live here.

B · Regional depth

Tsang and the river valleys

Lhoka's Samye and Yumbu, Shigatse's Tashilhunpo and Gyantse, Nyingchi's canyon: the second line carrying the first dynasty, the Panchen seat and the river's low valleys.

C · Slow corners

The west: Guge, Kailash, Manasarovar

Ngari's earth-forest ruins and the sacred mountain-lake pair are Tibet's far edge — long transfers, border papers and real altitude margins required.

  • Shannan–Shigatse · 4–5 days
  • Nyingchi or Ngari · 4–10 days

How to save money and time

RoutesPlan the Lhasa–Lhoka–Shigatse axis first; Nyingchi or Ngari after

Acclimatisation, the palace and temple bookings, Yamdrok and Shigatse all sit in one geo-band; Nyingchi and Ngari point opposite ways and their transfer costs don't share.

BookingPalace and Jokhang tickets first — rooms and charter after

The Potala opens 10 days ahead, Jokhang a day: without slots, nothing non-refundable gets booked.

TransportRail and licensed carpools cut the empty returns

Lhasa–Nyingchi and Lhasa–Shigatse have rail or mature lines — solo short legs don't price as charters; groups heading for Yamdrok, Lhoka or Everest compare charters by whole-day.

LodgingHigh points sleep by the window; Lhasa sleeps walkable

First Lhasa nights near Barkhor or the palace for walking and taxis; for Namtso, Everest or Kailash, sleep where the dawn light is — not in the city.

SeasonsUse the winter-free-entry scheme — but swap the sights by road state

Winter waives some tickets and often steadies visibility, while ice, wind and closures reshape the skeleton: spend the savings on the roads and the rooms, not on more checkpoints.

TicketsBuy only the combo items you'll use

Namtso, the great canyon and Lulang often bundle entry, shuttle and 'comprehensive' fees — first establish whether the shuttle is compulsory or optional; never pay for bundled shows unwatched.
