Between Yellow River oases and the Helan Mountains
Ningxia is small but compresses Yellow River irrigation, Silk Road traffic, Western Xia remains, Hui culture and desert ecology into a tight area — ideal for one complete, unhurried route.

Where to start
- Yinchuan's old town & the Ningxia Museum
- The Western Xia imperial tombs
- The Helan mountain rock art
- Zhenbeipu & the wine country
- Shapotou & the Yellow River homestays, Zhongwei
- The Xumishan grottoes, Guyuan
Read these before you plan
- P0The tombs' and museum's bookings and closures lock first
The Western Xia tickets, shuttle and museum follow the official account's day-of notices — Monday's free-entry scheme doesn't include the shuttle; the Ningxia Museum is free but books ahead.
- P0Shapotou by time-slot booking and the day's project notices
Adult entry runs a reference ~¥80 with peak hours about 8:00–19:00 and last entry ~17:00 — projects answer to wind, weather and maintenance.
- P0First visits sleep in Yinchuan; Zhongwei earns a night for dawn and dusk
Two Yinchuan nights minimum cover the tombs, rock art, Zhenbeipu and the museum; Zhongwei's dawn desert or the homestays' blue hour justify a town or nearby night.
- P0The cores' minimum times don't compress
The tombs 4–5 hours; Shapotou 5–6; Zhenbeipu 3–5; the rock art 3; the museum 2.5.
- P1Best light: morning sites, evening landforms
Clear mornings to the tombs and rock art; the low afternoon angle for Zhenbeipu's earthen walls; sunset at Shapotou, the homestays or Lanshan park; summer noons go indoors.
- P1The main frames stay few and precise
The tombs: the towers against the Helan. Rock art: the valley's faces and the blue sheep. Zhenbeipu: the Ming earthen walls. Shapotou: dune ridge and river in one frame. Shuidonggou: the earth pillars.
- P2Dust, rain and closures carry backups
Sandstorms, rain, gales and heat all move the desert projects, mountain roads and outdoor light — dust or gales reshuffle Shapotou and the art trails first; mountain flood seasons follow the transport notices.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Ningxia's first coordinates
The tombs, the rock art, Zhenbeipu, Shapotou and the museum cover history, petroglyphs, film culture, the river-desert meeting and the collections. First visits pick on this layer.
B · Regional depth
From the cores toward the river-and-oasis second line
Sand Lake, Shuidonggou, Qingtongxia, the homestays, the Helan wineries and Yinchuan's old town pull Ningxia back from single ticks to irrigation oasis, river works and city life.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
Guyuan's grottoes and the Liupan woods, Xiji's Danxia, Zhongwei's north-longs village and Yinchuan's sunsets complete the southern mountains, the Silk Road and the local rhythm.

- Guyuan Silk Road remains · 1–2 days
How to save money and time
The tombs, rock art, Zhenbeipu and wineries run one western axis — avoid doubling between town and mountain all day. Shapotou and the homestays take their own day; the south is its own trip again.
First-door entry is a reference ¥60–70, combos with shuttle about ¥95 — and Monday's free entry usually waives only the first door. Decide on the shuttle before choosing any package.
Entry is a reference ¥80 with projects priced singly or in sets: lock the entry slot on the official account, then compare entry-plus-two-projects against the full set.
Yinchuan–Zhongwei's expressway is easy, and the wineries, homestays and Sand Lake all want a car; groups self-driving usually beat charters. Guyuan, Xiji and Liupan's mountain roads stay daytime-only.
Two Yinchuan nights minimum; Zhongwei chooses town, the homestays or a desert hotel — the last being pricier and booking-critical.
Ningxia's steadiest windows bring unextreme weather, better light and feel — summer crowds at Shapotou, Sand Lake and Zhenbeipu raise both queues and prices.
