Oases, ranges and old roads across the heart of Asia
Xinjiang cannot be reduced to one grand loop. North and south of the Tianshan, the Tarim basin, the Pamir plateau and the Ili valley are each complete worlds — distance, season and border administration set the real limits.

Where to start
- Ürümqi & the Xinjiang Museum
- Turpan's old cities & the karez wells
- The Ili valley & Tianshan grasslands
- Kashgar's old city & the Pamirs
- The Kucha caves & the Duku road
- The Hotan oasis & the Tarim basin
Read these before you plan
- P0Fix the region and the transport skeleton before ordering sights
Xinjiang's distances magnify every flight delay, road closure or missed last bus: the north's Altay, the Ili valley, Turpan–Kucha and Kashgar–Pamir are different trips. Lock flights, lodging and the return first, then pick 2–3 points per region.
- P0Kanas and Hemu need their shuttles checked separately
In season the core points usually aren't reachable by ordinary self-drive logic: area buses split by line, stop and time slot. Confirm ticket gates, lodging pickups, re-entry and in-village transfers before paying anything.
- P0The Duku road runs on seasonal mountain and works rules
Usually closed winter–spring, and open months can still see controls for snow, rockfall, storms, works or traffic; the northern section ran reservation-based passage in 2026. Check the real-time road network before leaving, and hold a detour plan.
- P0For the Pamirs, the border pass comes before any point
Karakul, Tashkurgan and the nearer-border routes vary in documents and checkpoint scope by destination, nationality, children and临时 management — per the national immigration authority's guidance. Confirm before the trip, not at the checkpoint.
- P1Altitude and self-drive risk are assessed together
The Pamirs and some Tianshan roads run high with fast weather changes: official guidance says enter 3,000 m-plus by your capacity with proper gear. Persistent headache, vomiting or breathlessness means descend and seek care — not push on.
- P1Today's notices override old guides' prices and openings
Tianchi, Kanas, Hemu, Nalati, Sayram, the ruins and caves don't share one rule for tickets, shuttles, boats, night sessions or photography. Whatever the platform says, the scenic area's notice that day is the rule.
- P2Respect residents, religious sites and ecological edges
Kashgar's old city is lived in; Hemu is a village — not studios to walk into. Mosques, caves, checkpoints, herders and wildlife all carry on-site limits; photograph people with consent.
A · Northern coordinates
Read lakes, forest and grassland as different systems
Tianchi, Kanas, Hemu, Sayram and Nalati are all famous — and none is interchangeable 'nature backdrop'. A first Xinjiang visit sorts them by season, transfer cost and what you actually want to shoot.
B · Southern history and humanities
Put the old cities, ruins and caves back at Silk Road scale
The south's high returns come not only from 'exotic streets' but from earth cities, Buddhist caves, living quarters and desert heat: old towns for slow walks, ruins and caves for guided reading.
C · Roads, plateau and frontier
Treat the road itself as an itinerary variable
Suggested route shapes
- Urumqi–Turpan · 3 days
- Ili or the northern ranges · 5–7 days
- Kashgar–Pamir or the Kuqa southern line · 5–8 days
How to save money and time
Altay, Ili and Kashgar–Kucha aren't ordinary city-hinterland trips: fix your landing city, lodging and return, then take 2–3 points per region. Cross-region dashes are how Xinjiang trips fail.
Platforms bundle entry, return shuttle, insurance and service fees differently, and old guides' single-item prices expire. Before ordering: which gates, re-entry allowed, last bus, lodge pickup.
Xinjiang's hidden driving cost isn't tolls but fatigue, night legs, detours and recovery. Compare licensed charter against rental for groups; single drivers should think again.
It's a seasonal mountain road, with 2026's northern section adding works reservations. Hold G3012, G218 or other official alternates in the plan; waiting a day for a pass is a day of the trip.
Hemu's platform, Kanas's three bays, Sayram and Bayinbuluke's late light all depend on where you slept. In-area saves the dawn transfer; it also carries peak rates and strict change rules.
From 2026, mainland visitors 16-plus apply through the '移民局12367' app or mini-programs for passes up to three months; HK/Macau/Taiwan residents, overseas Chinese, foreigners and accompanied under-16s apply on site. Fill destinations accurately the first time.
