From the Hehuang valley to plateau lakes and the Three Rivers source
Qinghai is not one lake circuit. The Hehuang valley around Xining, its multi-ethnic religious spaces, the Qaidam basin, Qinghai Lake and the Sanjiangyuan headwaters operate at very different scales — build the trip around altitude adaptation.
English translations of the source blocks on this page were prepared with machine assistance and are under editorial review; the Chinese source text remains authoritative.

Where to start
- Xining's Dongguan quarter & the Tibetan culture museum
- Kumbum monastery & the Hehuang valley
- Qinghai Lake & Gangca grassland
- The Qilian mountains & Menyuan
- The Qaidam basin & Delingha
- Yushu's Jiegu monastery & the Sanjiangyuan gateway
Read these before you plan
- P0Qinghai Lake's Erlangjian books first — then the itinerary
2026 information lists peak-season entry at a reference ¥90–100, usually requiring advance time-slot real-name booking via '智游青海湖' or official channels — no on-site sales, with caps and hours moving.
- P0Altitude by steps, not courage
Xining, the lake, Chaka, Qilian and Yushu sit at different heights: don't go straight to Yushu on day one or chain passes back to back. Persistent headache, vomiting or chest tightness means descend and seek care.
- P0Lodging is decided by the next day's light
Ends in Xining; lake sunrises in Heimahe or Gangca; Zhuoer hill's dawn in Qilian town; the Qaidam line in Delingha or Dachaidan; Yushu at least a night in town.
- P0No crossing reserves or closed areas
Qinghai Lake's wetlands, Sanjiangyuan park, Nianbaoyuze and Amne Machin carry strict boundaries — 2026 saw repeated warnings against unopened 'wild' routes. Fines and rescues follow.
- P1June–September is the main window; light runs by direction
July–August pairs the lake's rapeseed with the water, Menyuan's bloom peaks early–mid July; mornings for reflections and Zhuoer's mist, pre-sunset for shores and dunes.
- P1A short must-list
First visits lock three or four of Erlangjian, Chaka, Zhuoer hill and the water yardangs, adding Menyuan or Gangca by time. The monastery and the museum are the culture anchors.
- P2Today's notices override static numbers
Fares, openings, shuttles, boats, cable cars and seasonal closures move constantly — re-verify official accounts and transport 24 hours out; wind, storms and controls accept substitutions.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Qinghai's first coordinates
Xining's humanities, Kumbum, Qinghai Lake and Chaka build the province's valley-to-plateau-lake basics — first visits pick on this layer before dreaming of rings.
B · Regional depth
From the cores on to the second line
Qilian, Menyuan, Gangca and the Qaidam road line each run separately: Zhuoer and Menyuan the northern branch, the salt lakes the Haixi direction, Gangca the lake's quiet shore.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
Delingha's twin lakes, Yushu, Regong, Kanbula and Guide complete the wetlands, the source gateway, religious art and Danxia — each with its own transport and wider margins.
Suggested route shapes
- Xining–Ta’er Monastery–Hehuang · 2 days
- Qinghai Lake–Qilian · 3–4 days
- Qaidam or Yushu · 4–6 days
How to save money and time
Xining–lake–Chaka–Delingha–Dachaidan suits 4–6 days; Qilian–Menyuan is the northern branch; Yushu, Tongren and Guide each carry separate transport. Eight days doesn't close the loop either.
Erlangjian's time-slot real-name rule with no on-site sales bites hardest in season — confirm via '智游青海湖' before lodging and charter.
Chaka, Emerald and Qarhan are all salt lakes with different transfers and frames: Chaka for reflections, Emerald for blue-green brine pools, Qarhan for industrial scale — pick by route, not by collecting.
Lake sunrises sleep in Heimahe or Gangca, Zhuoer's mist in Qilian town, the salt line in Delingha or Dachaidan — cutting night drives and second returns; Xining stays the arrival-departure base.
Menyuan's rapeseed peaks early–mid July with township-level variation — read that year's forecast; the salt lakes' mirrors depend on morning calm more than the calendar.
Xining ~2,200 m, the lake ~3,200, Yushu ~3,700: first Tibetan-plateau trips sleep in Xining, then the lake, then higher — with rest days, not willpower.
