Guilin vs Yangshuo: Where to Stay and How to Choose
Guilin vs Yangshuo — where should you stay? Compare scenery, hotels, transport and vibe, with picks for photographers, families and backpackers.
Guilin and Yangshuo are only 65 km apart, but they feel like different trips. Guilin is a proper city — transport hub, night markets, easy logistics. Yangshuo is the postcard: karst peaks rising straight out of rice paddies, a slow riverside town built for lingering. Where you stay decides what kind of trip you get. Here's how to choose.
The Short Answer
- Stay in Guilin if: it's your first night (airport/train arrival), you want comfort and convenience, or you have only 1–2 days total.
- Stay in Yangshuo if: karst scenery is the reason you came, you want the Li River and countryside at your doorstep, or you have 3+ days.
- Best of both: 1 night in Guilin + 2–3 nights in Yangshoo. This is what most experienced travelers do.

Where to Stay: Picks by Traveler Type
Photographers
Stay in Yangshuo — specifically near the Yulong River or in Xingping. The money shots (sunrise over the Li River at Xingping, fishermen with cormorants, Moon Hill at golden hour) all require early mornings. Staying in Guilin city means a 1.5-hour pre-dawn commute that kills the light. Budget ¥200–400/night for a riverside guesthouse with a rooftop.
Families
Split: 1 night Guilin + 2 nights Yangshuo. Guilin's Reed Flute Cave and the night cruise are easy wins with kids (no hiking, air-conditioned, ~2 hours each). Then move to Yangshuo for the Yulong River bamboo raft — calm water, life jackets provided, kids love it. Yangshuo's town center is walkable and stroller-manageable; the countryside roads are not.
Backpackers / budget travelers
Stay in Yangshuo. Hostels and family-run guesthouses run ¥80–180/night for a private room, half of Guilin's equivalent. West Street's bar street, the climbing scene at Moon Hill, and cheap bike rental (¥20–30/day) make it the natural base. Arrive via Guilin and don't look back.
Luxury / comfort travelers
Guilin for the hotels, Yangshuo for the experience. Guilin has the international-brand hotels (Shangri-La, Sheraton level, ¥600–1,200). But the region's standout luxury property is the Banyan Tree Yangshuo, set among karst peaks outside town — book it if the budget allows and pair with 1 night in Guilin on arrival.
First-timers with 2 days only
Stay in Guilin, day-trip to Yangshuo. Take the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (4–5 hours, ~¥450–550 including lunch — book a day ahead in peak season), spend the afternoon in Yangshuo town, and bus back to Guilin in the evening (~1.5 hr, last buses around 18:00–19:00). You see both without moving hotels.
Getting Between Guilin and Yangshuo
- Bus: Guilin bus station → Yangshuo, every ~20–30 min, ~1.5 hours, ¥25–35. Simplest option.
- High-speed train: Guilin → Yangshuo Station (阳朔站, actually in Xingping town), ~30 min, ¥25–40 second class. Note: Yangshuo Station is 30 minutes by bus/taxi from Yangshuo town itself — factor this in. Useful if you're continuing to Xingping's Li River viewpoints.
- Li River cruise: Guilin → Yangshuo, 4–5 hours, the journey is the sightseeing. One-way only; return by bus.
- Private car/taxi: ~1–1.5 hours, ¥250–350. Worth it for 3+ people or with heavy luggage.
How Many Days?
- 2 days: Guilin base, Li River cruise day-trip to Yangshuo (see above).
- 3–4 days (sweet spot): 1 night Guilin + 2–3 nights Yangshuo. Covers the cruise, Yulong River, Moon Hill, Xingping, and a slow morning.
- 5+ days: Add Longji Rice Terraces (2-day trip from Guilin) or go deeper into Yangshuo's countryside by bike.
Practical Tips
- Book the Li River cruise ahead in peak season (April–October, holidays) — the morning departures with the best light sell out.
- The 20-yuan view (the karst bend on the back of the ¥20 note) is at Xingping, 25 km from Yangshuo town — go at sunrise, not midday.
- Cash for the countryside. Yangshuo town takes mobile payment everywhere, but village stalls and bamboo rafts are cash-friendlier. Our payments guide covers setting up Alipay before you arrive.
- Weather matters more here than elsewhere. Karst scenery in rain is moody and beautiful; in heavy fog you see nothing. Check the forecast and keep plans flexible — our Guilin destination guide has month-by-month notes.
- Getting there: most travelers arrive by high-speed train (Guilin is ~3 hr from Guangzhou, ~2.5 hr from Changsha). If you're still figuring out train booking with a foreign passport, see our 12306 guide.
FAQ
Is Yangshuo worth it if I'm already going to Guilin? Yes — they're different experiences. Guilin gives you city karst and logistics; Yangshuo gives you the river-and-paddy landscape that made the region famous. If you only have time for one, pick Yangshuo for scenery, Guilin for convenience.
Can you do Yangshuo as a day trip from Guilin? Yes, via the Li River cruise (morning departure, afternoon in Yangshuo, evening bus back). It's a long day (12+ hours door to door) but very doable. With 2+ days available, staying overnight in Yangshuo is much better.
Where is the best area to stay in Yangshuo? West Street area for nightlife and convenience; the Yulong River / Shili Hualang (Ten-Mile Gallery) road for scenery and quiet; Xingping for photographers chasing sunrise. Avoid booking "Yangshuo Station area" thinking it's the town — it's 30 minutes away.
Guilin or Yangshuo for a family with young kids? Split the stay. Guilin's caves and night cruise are low-effort wins; Yangshuo's bamboo rafting and flat riverside paths work well with kids. Yangshuo town itself is compact and walkable.
