West Lake at dawn, tea terraces

West Lake is the most written-about landscape in Chinese poetry, and it still works: walk the causeways at dawn, then climb into the Longjing tea hills behind them. Under an hour from Shanghai by rail.

Where to start
- West Lake & Southern Song remains, Hangzhou
- Shaoxing old town & Lake Jian
- Ningbo's Tianyi Pavilion & port history
Read these before you plan
- P0Reservations, boat tickets and time-slot rules come before any checklist
Putuoshan's time-slot booking, Dongji and Huaniao boat tickets, the Lu Xun quarter's free reservation and Yandang's timed entry can each reshape a whole day. Confirm release times and real-name rules through official channels before booking lodging and transfers — third-party 'guaranteed ticket' services are not a reliable substitute.
- P0Hangzhou–Shaoxing–Ningbo chains; the south and the islands don't
Short HSR hops and dense cities make Hangzhou–Shaoxing–Ningbo a 4–5 day line. The Nanxi River, Songyang, Yandang and the Zhoushan islands each demand their own transport blocks and sailing schedules. Take one main line on a first visit and give the southern mountains or an island 3–4 days of their own — not daily relocation.
- P0Sleep near the shooting windows and the docks
For the West Lake line stay by the lake or on the metro; at Yandang in Yandang town; on the Nanxi in Yantou; in Songyang the county town or your chosen village; on the islands only in guesthouses that fit the sailing schedule, with the dock transfer confirmed. Never trade an early start and refund flexibility for a view room.
- P0Give the core sights their minimum time
West Lake at least 4 hours, Putuoshan 6–8, Yandang a day across two areas, Tianyi Pavilion 2.5, the Lu Xun quarter plus Cangqiao 3, the Nanxi a day, Songyang a day and a night, Dongji two nights, Huaniao two nights. Below these, booking, queues and transport eat the useful hours.
- P1Give dawn and dusk to the light-sensitive water
West Lake, the Nanxi, Qiandao Lake, Lake Jian and the islands are steadiest at the day's edges; spend mid-morning on villages, museums or gorge walks. Yandang's Lingfeng night view lives in the silhouette window after sunset — don't compress day and night visits into one dash.
- P1Few, precise cores; avoid stacking identical old towns
At West Lake, the dikes, boats and Baochu Pagoda relation; at Putuoshan, temples against the sea; at Yandang pick two of Lingfeng, Lingyan and Dalongqiu; on the Nanxi, the shoal woods plus Lishui Street; in Songyang, Yangjiatang and Chenjiapu. Of Wuzhen, Nanxun and Moganshan, one is enough — never all three.
- P2Let the day's notice settle weather, closures and village boundaries
Typhoon-season sailings, rainy-season mountain roads, Monday museum closures and weather-shifted boats at Yandang and Qiandao all defer to official notices that day. Traditional villages and temples are living space: don't block lanes, don't enter courtyards uninvited, and don't stage villagers or religious life as backdrops.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Zhejiang's first coordinates
West Lake, Putuoshan, Yandang, Shaoxing's old town and Tianyi Pavilion stand for the water city, the sea island, the mountain, the literary heritage and the library tradition. A first visit shouldn't force them all — but no points build the province's picture better.
B · Regional depth
From the core coordinates on to the second line
The Nanxi, Songyang, Dongji and the Hangjiahu water towns represent three other rhythms: southern mountain villages, eastern islands and the classic Jiangnan town. They suit travellers with six days or more who will give mountains and boat schedules their own blocks.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
The port museum, Nanxun, Lake Jian, Huaniao Island and the Southern Song Imperial Street complete the port history, water-town, Yue culture, island and urban-commercial chapters. Their transport and information costs run higher — they don't fit rushed insertions.
Suggested route shapes
- Hangzhou–Shaoxing–Ningbo · 4–5 days
- Wenzhou & the Nanxi River · 2–3 days
- Lishui villages or Zhoushan islands · 3–4 days
How to save money and time
Convenient HSR makes the trio a 4–5 day main line. The Nanxi, Songyang and Yandang belong to the south; the Zhoushan islands live by docks and sailings. Don't compress multiple geo-belts into two cities a day just because they share a province — lodging and transport end up costing more.
The West Lake shore is free, with Sanyan Island, Leifeng Pagoda and the rest ticketed; Wuzhen's East+West combo is same-day only, and staying inside Xizha changes the ticket rules; Nanxun's streets walk free without the combo. Decide which courtyards you'll enter at each stop before comparing single against combo — never on 'the combo saves' alone.
Dongji, Huaniao and the rest don't run walk-on; in season the ticket and the caps can decide the trip. Verify release times, real-name rules and refund terms through official public accounts and mini-programmes; without a ticket, don't book non-refundable rooms — and never buy scalper packages.
For West Lake mornings, the lakeside or a metro line; at Yandang, the town, for the two sessions; on the Nanxi, Yantou, splitting villages from the river; in Songyang, the county town or a village for the morning cloud. On islands, confirm the guesthouse-to-dock link first — saving on the room while paying more in taxis and backtracks is a bad trade.
March–May and September–November are the best windows for most landscapes and old towns, but Qingming, May Day and weekends push Moganshan, Wuzhen and Nanxun rates up. Stagger where you can: weekends for city museums, nature and islands on ordinary weekdays. Friday promos like Qiandao's can backfire into crowds.
Shops at the entrances of Wuzhen, Nanxun and Hefang Street pay peak rents — homogeneous menus, long queues. Step into a side lane or the next residential block for local noodles, bamboo shoots and river fish: steadier cost and experience. On islands, food follows sailings — confirm whether your guesthouse includes meals before relying on island shops.
