Silk Road desert oasis & Buddhist caves

A desert oasis on the Silk Road: the Mogao Caves hold a thousand years of Buddhist art on their walls, and the dunes of Mingsha Mountain end at a crescent-shaped spring. It is a long way from anywhere — Lanzhou is a full night on the train — but the town is small, flat and walkable, and both headline sites are a short taxi ride away.

Where to start
- Lanzhou's Yellow River & the provincial museum
- The Maijishan Grottoes, Tianshui
- The Linxia–Xiahe ethnic corridor
Read these before you plan
- P0The Mogao booking decides all of Dunhuang
Confirm your A or B ticket on the official reservation network first, then schedule the digital films, the singing dunes and the west line. Peak opening runs about 8:00–18:00 with last entry mid-afternoon — build around it.
- P0Gansu is not a short distance to flash through
Lanzhou, Tianshui, Gannan, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang sit hundreds of kilometres apart: ten days takes one main line. The Hexi corridor runs Lanzhou–Zhangye–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang at minimum.
- P0Fix the minimum times and the lodging first
Mogao half a day, Maijishan 4–5 hours, the rainbow mountains 4–6, Jiayuguan's three sights 5–6; Dunhuang wants two nights-plus. Sleep first in Dunhuang, Zhangye town and Xiahe.
- P1Turn the light windows into a written schedule
Grottoes and museums at opening; the Danxia, the dunes and Jiayuguan in pre-sunset side light; the Dunhuang west line puts the yardangs at dusk; Labrang's prayer wheels at dawn and the golden roofs in the afternoon.
- P1Keep the must-list to four, precise
First Gansu holds four high-return coordinates: Mogao, Maijishan, Zhangye's rainbow Danxia, Jiayuguan — with the dunes added at Dunhuang. Yulin, the yardangs, the passes and Bingling are dedicated-theme extensions.
- P2Weather, wind and closures swap by the day's notice
The corridor's sand, wind and temperature swings are real; storms, dust, maintenance or crowd control can stop sales or close sites. Check the areas' accounts and transport the night before, and never force a climb in gales.
- P2Religious and heritage boundaries outrank photos
Labrang's halls, Mati's caves, Bingling and Mogao all limit shooting and visiting: no images of Buddhas or monks, no climbing rammed earth or wind-carved forms, no closed areas. The yardangs are a national geopark — stay on the lines.
A · Core landmarks
Start with Gansu's five visual coordinates
Mogao, Maijishan, the Danxia, the desert and Jiayuguan cover Silk Road art, Buddhist grottoes, landform colour and the wall's gate. A first visit needn't take all five in five days — but these are the province's picture.
B · Regional depth
Link the cores into corridor and plateau
From Lanzhou's city and the Gannan Tibetan country to Zhangye's oasis and Linxia's grottoes: the ethnic, religious and mountain lines beyond the corridor — for those with the base cognition who'll follow the geography.
C · Slow corners
Depth spots for the experienced or the unhurried
Yulin, the yardangs, Yangguan, Yumen and Wuwei complete Dunhuang's cave art, the road's passes and the corridor's eastern history — for second visits and theme lines.

- Zhangye–Jiayuguan · 3 days
- Dunhuang caves & passes · 3–4 days
How to save money and time
Lanzhou–Wuwei–Zhangye–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang follows the geography; Tianshui and Gannan point elsewhere. Within ten days take the Hexi main line by rail or charter segment by segment.
The A ticket includes the digital films, eight caves and the shuttle at a reference ¥238; the B emergency ticket is ~¥100 for four caves. Book through the official channels first — then arrange everything else around the slot.
The peak combo is a reference ¥110 covering the fortress, the overhanging wall and the First Beacon — three hours means the fortress alone may fit better. A full day with self-drive or charter is when the combo pays.
Yumen, Yangguan and the yardangs all sit outside town: separate short tours pay the transfer twice. One compliant charter or carpool for the west-line day, ordered by sunrise and sunset; in season book early.
Dunhuang town suits Mogao and the dunes; Zhangye town the Danxia and Mati; Xiahe town the dawn prayer wheels. One night only? Closest to the entrance you'll enter at dawn.
May–October works overall, but July–August bakes the corridor and squeezes Mogao bookings; September–October feels best with good visibility — the Danxia, the dunes and Jiayuguan's dusk all want it.
